American Counseling Association Foundation (ACAF) Tips for Grant Applicants

The American Counseling Association Foundation (ACAF) is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to support the work of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and to advance and promote the counseling profession.

The mission of ACA and thus the mission of ACAF is to promote the professional development of counselors, advocate for the profession, and ensure ethical, culturally inclusive practices that protect those using counseling services.

Of particular interest are ACAF grant proposals that focus on serving the community, the counseling profession, COVID, trauma-informed care and COVID, COVID’s impact on underserved communities, and COVID as it pertains to grief and loss.  Requests for tuition or dissertation funding are not accepted.

To ensure a strong review of your grant application, the ACAF provides the following tips when crafting your ACAF Grant Proposal:

  • Does the title and description of your grant clearly outline the focus of the project/grant idea?
  • Has the proposal been edited, including spell and grammar check?
  • Does the project clearly align with the mission of the American Counseling Association Foundation? Has that been articulated in the proposal?
  • Does the project align with the funding priorities of this specific grant cycle?
  • Does the project demonstrate cultural competency and involvement of serving diverse individuals?
  • Has the grant writer clearly outlined their title and role (i.e., a faculty member, a graduate student, dissertation student, etc.)?

Has the grant writer clearly outlined an itemized budget describing how the funds will be expended? It is recommended that proposals only itemize specific items/activities that would be covered by the grant.
